The Many Long-term Benefits of Quitting

March 5th, 2009

In part one we talked about the benefits in the first few days of giving up smoking and how within twenty minutes good stuff is going on in your body. In this part we’re going to talk about the benefits after a couple of weeks up until 15 years where your risk of coronary heart disease becomes the same as a person that never smoked.Lets start within a couple of months of giving up. Through these weeks your circulation and breathing improve making it easier to walk. Your lungs start functioning up to 30% better.

Starting in this time and sometimes taking up to a year your coughing, fatigue and shortness of breathe decrease and your immune system improves. This makes you a lot healthier in only a year and you will be able to feel the difference, I know I did.

Within one year of giving up smoking your risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker and then within two years the risk of you having a heart attack drops to near normal. This means that after two years you are one your way to been almost as healthy as someone who doesn’t smoke.

Within five years of quitting your risk of having a stroke is reduced and the risk of getting lung cancer is halved. This is almost reduced to similar of someone who has never smoked by ten years and chances of getting other cancers such as mouth, larynx, bladder and kidney are dramatically reduced.

After 15 years the risk of you having coronary heart disease becomes the same as someone who has never smoked.

That is good news isn’t it. From day one your becoming more healthier and after a couple of years the risk of disease is been reduced. After around 10 to 15 years your body is almost that of someone who has never smoked adding years to your life which goes to show that it’s never too late to quit smoking.

Now you need to plan on how your going to quit smoking as I’m sure you want to after reading this. Once you have made up your mind to quit, you will need to do two things:  find a program or product that will work for you to help you stop smoking,  and put your stop smoking plan into action, today, right now!

Incentive to Quit Smoking is Not Hard to Find

November 30th, 2007

Enhancing the quality and length of your life by quitting smoking is a worthwhile effort. It is definitely not an easy task, but it can be accomplished with time and patience. To quit smoking successfully, finding out what your options are. Knowing where to go for help is a wise first step. Quitting smoking is the best move that you can make for your health and the health of all of those around you.

Just about everyone knows by now that smoking causes diseases that shorten your life or those that may even end it. Diseases such as lung cancer, throat, esophagus, bladder, and kidney, and pancreas cancers are some horrible things caused by smoking for a start. Not to mention some leukemia, stomach, and cervix cancers, and newly added by the Surgeon General is pneumonia.

People who smoke are more than three times as likely to die due to heart attack as non smokers. Smoking is a major risk factor for a disease that narrows the blood vessels that transport blood to the limbs and muscles called peripheral vascular disease as well as the disease that causes some strokes.

If that‘s not enough to convince you to stop smoking, let’s look at your appearance. Premature wrinkling of skin, chronic bad breath, discolored fingernails and hair, and an increase risk of macular degeneration a leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Smoking over the age of thirty-five if you are a woman can put you in a high risk group for stroke, heart attack, and blood clots of the legs, low birth weight of babies and miscarriages. But the hopeful portion of this message is that if you decide to quite regardless of how long you’ve smoked or how much, quitting will help you to live longer.

In as little as twenty minutes after quitting smoking the heart rate and blood pressure drops and in one to nine months following quitting smoking, circulation in your hands extremities and lung function increases. Shortness of breath decreases and your lungs begin to function properly, cleaning the lungs and removing mucus that causes infection. Fifteen years of non smoking and your risk of heart disease is that of non smoking persons. These benefits can be obtained from quitting smoking even if you are suffering from a smoking related illness already.

Smoking is less socially accepted now more than ever. Smoking bans have been placed in just about every workplace in the nation along with airports, public buildings. Even friends may insist that you not smoke in their houses or cars. Some people may even find dating more difficult because of a bad smoking habit. So the social impacts of not smoking will probably change your life for the better if you quit.

If you have a family, that is another great motivation to quit smoking. The main reason is that the secondhand smoke could pose serious health problems for others who do not deserve such things. You should also consider what kind of role model you are being to any small children that you live with, whether they are your own kids, siblings, nieces and nephews, or any other relation. You may be living with kids who look up to you as an authority figure, and if you teach them that smoking is alright you will feel very guilty later in life.

Some of the many new products used to help an individual to stop smoking are really very effective. Counseling services, reading materials, medicines, and patches are all widely available and have produced some amazing results. Educational materials alone may be the best beginning start to an attempt to quit because once you know what kind of damage you are doing to your body the prudent and reasonable person will definitely see that it is the very best thing to do. However, it has been documented and researched that the highest success rates occur when a combination of methods are used simultaneously. Take the time and do it for yourself and your loved ones, quit for life.

A “Quit Smoking” Support Group Can Be Helpful

October 19th, 2007

Many former smokers will readily admit a quit smoking support group can be very beneficial during the difficult times that lie ahead for anyone trying to break the habit. These quit smoking support group meetings aren’t found in every community, but where they aren’t, they can be created.

Even though it might sound like a waste of time to some, the benefits of a quit smoking support group are many. Having like-minded people around during the process of breaking the habit can be incredibly helpful and may even work better for some than other quit smoking aids.

Let’s look at some of the benefits a well organized quit smoking support group can offer those that take part:

People to talk to. Anyone who goes to a quit smoking support group will enjoy the instant benefit of seeing they are not alone. Having people who are going through the same ordeals can be very helpful in solidifying resolve. A quit smoking support group has the main function of bringing people together who are in the same boat. It is particularly nice to have people who fully understand the process and its pains to speak with. This is absolutely the biggest benefit to a quit smoking support group.

New ideas. This is one of the biggest benefits of a quit smoking support group. Since everyone is in the same boat, it’s possible new ideas for handling cravings or withdrawal symptoms can come to light. Some of these ideas might work for you, some might not. But, the fact is only those who are going through the process of quitting can really offer advice on getting through it.

Camaraderie: This is another huge perk of a quit smoking support group. Within these groups, people can find new friends or at the very least others who might help bolster them when the going gets tough. By forming a bond if for nothing more than kicking the habit, people in quit smoking support group meetings can be a want-to-be-ex-smoker’s best friend. Sometimes these quit smoking support group meetings even include outings to help non-smokers deal with those who do. By having support group friends to hang out with, the temptations to go back to the habit will be lessened.

Quit smoking support group meetings are often offered by nonprofit organizations, churches and hospitals. They can be very helpful to anyone trying to break the habit. Check with the cancer society in your area to find a quit smoking support group. If there isn’t one, you can look into forming a quit smoking support group by also speaking to health department officials, hospital programs managers or even the cancer society.

While a quit smoking support group won’t work for everyone, the benefits of going can prove very helpful to others.

Quit Smoking With Hypnosis

September 19th, 2007

Many people wonder if it is possible to stop smoking with hypnosis. The answer to that question is an emphatic yes, but the ultimate success will lie in the hands of the patient. While learning how to stop smoking with hypnosis is a bit unorthodox, the method has, in fact, proven very successful for many former smokers.

The key to learning how to stop smoking with hypnosis is to have a strong sense of motivation before going to the appointment. The more motivated a person in, the more likely it will be to learn how to stop smoking with hypnosis. The reasons for this are many, but not the least of which is the fact if the brain is pre-convinced it can do something, hypnosis can just add that extra push to make it so.

When a person chooses to stop smoking with hypnosis, the first thing that must be done is an appointment must be set. Make sure to find a reputable therapist to do this task, preferably one that’s endorsed by a host of former patients and professional organizations. In most cases, those who seek to stop smoking with hypnosis will find a single appointment is all that’s necessary. Sometimes a free follow-up visit will be in order to successfully stop smoking with hypnosis.  Read the rest of this entry »

threaten their health, set a bad example for their children,
annoy their acquaintances and cost an inordinate amount of
money.

Nobody can force a smoker to quit. It’s something each person
has to decide for himself, and will require a personal commitment
by the smoker. What kind of smoker are you? What do you get out
of smoking? What does it do for you? It is important to
identify what you use smoking for and what kind of satisfaction
you feel that you are getting from smoking.
